CDT's CUSTOM-MADE DIAMOND WHEELS PROVE TO BE GROUNDBREAKING ON EXPLORATION TO MARS
NASA launched a Mars exploration with the hopes of gaining a better understanding of the planet's history. Scientists predicted that by looking for signs of past water activity they could gain knowledge of potential life on Mars. However, that would not be a simple task to accomplish. Not only did scientists need samples of the planet's surface, but of the interior as well. A special tool was needed to perform the task of grinding the rocky foundation to expose the interior of the Martian surface.
As a leader in custom manufactured diamond and CBN wheels, Continental Diamond Tool was up to the challenge. Working for NASA contractor, Honeybee Robotics Ltd., CDT helped to design and develop several grinding wheels for testing then waited in anticipation for Honeybee engineers to choose the suitable flight model. The custom-made grinding wheel was then attached to the working end of the Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT), which was designed and operated by Honebyee Robotics Ltd. The RAT mounted to the end of the robotic arm located on each Rover (named Spirit and Opportunity) which was responsible for investigation the martian surface and arriving at the research location.
Once again, Continental Diamond Tool's custom-made grinding wheel prevailed by accomplishing a given task! CDT created a soft resin bond formulation which proved to be compatible with the low down force applied by the robotic arm of the RAT. After removing dust from the rocky surface, Continental Diamond Tool's grinding wheel was successful at digging a hole nearly 5cm in diameter and 5mm in depth!!
